Emily in Paris Makeup Look

For actress Lily Collins, the star of Netflix’s “Emily in Paris,” French girl beauty means bold eyes, understated lips and fresh clear skin. “The less you have on your face, the less there is to go wrong throughout the day,” she says.

The actress, like most of us, wishes she was elsewhere right now. Specifically, Paris, where she spent four months last year filming her new Netflix show, “Emily in Paris.” The series is full of historic landmarks — the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe — as well as a mix of vintage and haute couture fashion and, of course, French girl beauty looks: deep red lips, subtle cat eyes, great skin. “The one thing I love about the je ne sais quoi vibe of no makeup-makeup is fresh clear skin,” says Collins at home in Los Angeles. “I’ve always said, ‘the less you have on your face, the less there is to go wrong throughout the day.’”

For Collins, a video tutorial on Parisian glamour begins with the basics: drugstore-bought face wash, toner and lip balm, the latter of which she applies after exfoliating her mouth with a coconut scrub that tastes so good you won’t need to wash it off with water. For medium-to light-weight coverage, the actress mixes a quarter-size drop of Lancome’s Teint Idole Ultra 24-hour Long Wear Foundation — “the perfect partner for the no-makeup makeup look,” she says — with two drops of the brand’s Advanced Génifique Serum, which is packed with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. After dabbing the mixture onto her forehead, chin and the apples of her cheeks using her forefinger, and blending it in with a sponge, Collins applies powder foundation to set and blush to contour her face.

Next, her favorite part of the beauty regimen: “It’s all about the brows,” says Collins of a routine that, given her pronounced Audrey Hepburn-style arches, is surprisingly low-key. She swipes highlighter across the eyelid and under the brow, then brushes the hair up and over — that’s it. Further enhancement of the eyes includes two flicks of liquid liner at the outer edges and a coat of Monsieur Big Volumizing Mascara, a longtime favorite product that makes her lashes “just come alive.”

A swipe of nude lipstick followed by a coat of Juicy Tube Lip Gloss is the best way to finish a less-is-more beauty look. “Juicy Tubes are super reminiscent of my childhood,” says Collins, recalling the first time she saw the large collection at the beauty counter, and wanting a tube in every color (there are 20 shades). “I was like a kid in a candy store.”

To capture the Parisian je ne sais quoi vibe, remember: smelling good supersedes all. Collins lets down her unwashed hair, with the help of some dry shampoo, and lets her perfume do the rest. Her scent of choice? La Vie Est Belle, which means “life is beautiful” in French. “It makes me miss Paris,” she says of its vanilla- and iris-infused aroma, which she sprays onto her neck, wrists, and into the air above her. “I let it fall all over me and imagine I’m back there, like a little travel trip in my head.”
